Rosemary Ryan finished one place out of the medals running 15:48.45 for fourth place in the 5,000 metres.

The time is a seasonal best for the oft-injured Bilboa AC runner. Ryan's personal is 15:17.57 (05/08/00, Hechtel, Belgium), a time that earned a spot on the Irish Olympic team last year in Sydney. Yanmei Dong of China captured the gold in front of her home crowd in 15:30.28.

FRIDAY, 31st AUGUST

Mark Howard placed sixth in his semifinal in 20.95 and did not advance to the final.

Aoife Byrne ran 2:04.97 to place fourth in her semifinal heat. Byrne missed qualifying for the final as one of the fastest losers by a mere half second.



THURSDAY, 30th AUGUST

Mark Howard ran 20.88 to break the Irish U23 200m record in his second round race and is the ninth seeded runner going into tomorrow's semifinal. The old record of 20.93 belonged to Paul Brizzell set in Tallinn, Estonia on 19th June 1998. Howard goes in the semifinal tomorrow at 10.00 am which is 3.00 am Irish time. Howard, from Fingallians AC ran 21.02 for second in heat 2 of the first round giving him the ninth fastest qualifying time. Paul McKee (Cuchulainn AC) ran 21.52 for third in his first round race. McKee then ran a personal best of 21.42 for sixth in his quarterfinal race but did not advance to the semifinal.

Aofie Byrne ran 2.06.14 in the opening round of the 800 metre event. The Dundrum South Dublin runner is fresh off a personal best and new U23 record of 2.01.89 set on 17th August in Namur, Belgium. Conor Sweeney was not as lucky running 1.50.08 for third place in Heat 6 of the 800m qualifying heats. The St Malachy's lad did not advance to the semifinal as the top 2 from each heat plus the next four fastest losers moved on.

WEDNESDAY, 29th AUGUST

St Malachy's Gareth Turnbull mined silver in the 1,500 metre event at the 21st World University Games in Beijing. Turnbull, now a student at Loughborough University ran 3.44.21. After the race Turnbull told RTÉ, "I'm very happy but it's not a surprise to me or my coach. I'm sure there'll be more medals in years to come."

Women's High Jump, 1st Round
Deirdre Ryan, Dundrum South Dublin jumped 1.80m placing 17th in the high qualifying round. Ryan would have needed to equal her personal best of 1.85m to advance.

Men's 20k Walk Final
Colin Griffin from Ballinamore AC covered 20 kilometres in 1:37:47 to place 19th in the 20k walk.
