2001 IAAF World Championship Irish Team Results

Day 10 - Sunday 12th August

  • Teresa Duffy placed 39th in the women's marathon running 2:43:33.

Day 9 - Saturday 11th August

  • Ireland placed seventh in the third of three qualifying heats of the 4 x 400m relay setting a National Record of 3:04.26. The team was comprised of Robert Daly, Tom Comyns, Paul McKee and Tomás Coman. With the qualification rule being the first 2 of each heat (Q) plus the 2 fastest losers (q) qualified, the Irish squad was never in the hunt for a spot in Sunday's final but made an impact during their brief stint on the fast Edmonton track. The team broke the previous Irish Record of 3:05.45 set in Lahti, Finland on 6th June 1999 with a team of Brian Forbes, Coman, McKee and Tom McGuirk.
  • Jamie Costin placed 28th in the 50-kilometre road walk in 4:11:58. Costin's winter training partner Poland's Robert Korzeniowski won the race in a world leading time of 3:42:08, which had ten disqualifications and seven starters not finishing.

Day 8 - Friday 10th August

  • Terry McHugh threw 71.99m, 75.49m and 73.12m to place eleventh in the Group B qualifying round. The qualification standard to advance to finals was a toss of 84.00m or at least best 12 qualified.

Day 7 - Thursday 9th August

  • Olive Loughnane placed thirteenth in the 20k walk in 1:35:24. Teammate, Gillian O'Sullivan was disqualified as was more than a third (15/42) of the field.
  • UCD's James Nolan had the dubious honour of drawing the first of three qualifying races in the 1,500 metre event. With two races to follow, the other runners look at the results of the first race and try to make their race's pace more ambitious ensuring fastest loser qualifiers from their heat. Hoping to avoid this oft unavoidable scenario, Nolan took the pace setting duty taking the leaders through the first circuit in 60.28 and led the parade of runners at the 800 metre mark in 2.00.34. Defending World Champion and World Record holder Hicham El Guerrouj took a over the top spot and never relinquished his position. Nolan was unable to hold on when the pack injected pace with a lap to go finishing a disappointing tenth in 3:42.84. Predictably, the fastest losers came from the next two sections.
  • After breaking her 200m record in the 1st Round, Sarah Reilly was rewarded with Lane 1 and had a difficult time getting going on the tight turn placing seventh in 23.24 (-0.3). Reilly did not qualify for the final but should hold her head high after her record setting performance and making it to the World's semifinal.
  • Breeda Dennehy Willis ran 15:26.97 to place tenth in the first of two 5,000 metre qualifying heats. In the same race, Una English placed eighteenth in 16:26.15. In the second section, Maria McCambridge placed seventeenth in 16:04.49 With the qualifying rule being the first 5 of each heat (Q) plus the 5 fastest losers (q) qualified, none of the Irish runners move on to Saturday's final.

Day 6 - Wednesday 8th August

  • Sarah Reilly ran 23.02 (+0.3) in the third of five 1st Round heats. Reilly's time set an Irish 200m record breaking her own record of 23.12 (-0.5) set in Budapest, Hungary on 22nd July 2000. With the first 4 of each heat (Q) plus the 4 fastest losers (q) qualified for the semifinal, Reilly (Birchfield) moves on to Thursday race where she's in the third of three semifinal heats in lane 1.
  • Peter Coghlan placed fifth in the first of three semifinal heats in 13.61 (+1.0) and did not advance to the final.

Day 5 - Tuesday 7th August

  • Peter Coghlan qualified for the semifinals of the 110m hurdles yesterday evening in Edmonton with a time of 13.57 (+1.0) placing fourth in Heat 6 of 6 in the 1st Round. Coghlan advaned as on the fastest losers as the top 3 automatically advanced to tomorrow's semifinal.

Day 4 - Monday 6th August

  • Karen Shinkins placed sixth in her 400m semifinal race running 51.66. The top 2 finishers in each of the three races automatically advance to the final along the next two fastest losers.
  • Mark Carroll relived the Sydney nightmare this morning in Edmonton by placing 10th in the first of two 5,000m qualifying heats. The top 5 automatically qualified, Carroll ran 13:37.27 and did not advance to the final on time (fastest losers) either.

Day 3 - Sunday 5th August

  • Karen Shinkins ran a seasonal best time 51.37 in her 1st Round heat and qualified for Monday's Semifinal where she'll be in Heat 1, lane 2 and no doubt chasing her Irish record of 51.07.

Day 2 - Saturday 4th August

  • Robert Heffernan placed 14th in the 20 kilometre walk in 1:25:02.
  • Tomás Coman placed sixth in his 400m 1st Round running a seasonal best 45.90 but did not qualify for the semifinal.
  • Daniel Caulfield ran 1.47.23 to place fourth in his qualifying heat and did not advance.
