INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS/RESULTS
James had a marvelous run to take the silver medal in the recent European U23 T&F Championships 800m in Gothenburg. He has been very successful indoors, finishing 5th in the 800m final at the World Indoor T&F in 1999 in Japan, and 4th at the 1998 European Indoor T&F Championships. He also finished a close 2nd in the 1999 Millrose Games 800m in USA. Outdoors, at U23 level he finished 5th in the final of the 1997 European U23 T&F Championships 800m. As a junior, the Tullamore native placed 4th in the 800m at the 1995 European Junior T&F Championships, and 8th in the 800m final in the 1996 World Junior T&F Championships. In 1994 he placed 2nd in the 800m at the European Youth Olympics.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS/RESULTS
In the 1999 TNT BLE National Senior T&F Championships, James ran the fourth fastest 800m on the Irish All-Time list with a 1:46.61, in the heats. However a slight injury forced him to withdraw from the final of the event that he won for the first time in 1998. Indoors, he made it two in a row by successfully defending his BLE National Indoor T&F 800m title in 1999. He is the current National Indoor Recorder holder with 1.47.26 from 1999.

1999 FORM
James opened the season with a few 1500m races, including a fine 2nd place finish in the Europa Cup in Finland. He ran 1:47.66 to place 7th in the 800m in the GPII meet in Hengelo, before smashing his personal best with a 1:46.05 to finish 3rd in the Helsinki GPI meet. He ran his first sub 4 minute mile on his mile debut in Gateshead, clocking 3.56.31 to finish 4th behind Haile Gebreslaisse. Equally impressive was his solo 1:46.61 in the BLE National T&F heats. He warmed up for Seville with a fine silver medal winning performance in the European U23 T&F Championships in Gothenburg behind German Nils Schumann, in a time of 1:46.94.
