Heffernan Sets 20k Record in Naumburg
Shinkins Second in Qatar GP I Meet


Robert Heffernan placed second in the 20k walk event in 1.20.25 at the Grand Prix (EAA Permit) held in Naumburg, Germany on 5th May.

Heffernan, from Togher AC is currently ranked sixth in the world, lowered his own Irish record (1:21.11) which he set last year at Leamington.

Gillian O'Sullivan won the 20k walk in 1.31.16 with Olive Loughnane placing sixth in 1.32.44. Jeff Cassin placed 7th in the 50-kilometre walk (4.14.52).

Karen Shinkins placed second in the 400 metres at the Qatar Athletic Grand Prix I meeting held in Doha, Qatar on 15th May. Shinkins (Dublin City Harriers) ran 51.48, a mere .11 off last season's best of 51.37 run at the World Championships in Edmonton. Christine Amertil (Bahamas) won the race in 50.82 with Mireille Nguimgo (Cameroon) placing third in 51.96.

Shinkins, 25, trains with the Speed Dynamics team based in Atlanta, Georgia. She is the Irish record holder in the 400-metre event with her 51.07 set in Palma de Mallorca, Spain at the World University Games on 12th July 1999.
