Keenan Buckley Fifth in Balmoral
Anne Keenan Buckley (North Laois A.C.) ran 26.55 for fifth with five-mile race with the oft-overlooked Teresa Duffy (Beechmount Harriers A.C.) in fourteenth in 28.01. Peter Matthews (Dundrum South Dublin A.C.) placed thirteenth in 23.38 in the men's race. Ethiopia's Gete Wami won the women's race in 25.14 with Mohammed Mourhit (Belgium) winning the men's race in 22.40. Valerie Vaughan (Blarney/Inniscara A.C.) ran 10.05 to place ninth in Compaq Women's 3k won by British track star Kelly Holmes (9.25). Brit John Mayock ran 11.02 to win the Tesco Men's 4k race.
McKiernan Back In Action
It was good to see Catherina McKiernan over the weekend competing in her first race in a year at Dunboyne, County Meath, and finishing second to a Kenyan runner in a time of 20.31. McKiernan was some seven seconds behind the winner and some twenty seconds ahead of third placed Louise Cavanagh of UCC. In the men's race Leevale's Cathal Lombard dropped out after fading to fourth with 400m to go, with victory going to Mick Traynor (19.03), Mark Kenneally (19.23), Conor McGee (19.24), Gary Hynes (19.34), Killian Lonergan (19.38). Harrington Wins Four Miler
The Examiner reported that Pat Byrne, a Carlow-based Army international athlete of Tinroyland AC won the Jack O'Keeffe Boherbue to Kiskeam 4-Mile road race on the 16th of April. Maureen Harrington (Riocht A.C.) won the women's race in 23.47. Blaithin Hannon of St. Finbarrs was second with Anne Sexton from Kilmurry getting third place. Rounding out the top ten in the men's race were: 2) J. Barrett (Desmond Currans) 20.58; 3) T. O'Connor (Riocht) 21.16; 4) A. Fitzgerald (21.37); 5) P. O'Shea (Iveragh) 21.55; 6) R. Purcell (Desmond Currans) 22.07; 7) M. O'Shea (Iveragh) 22.18; 8) J. Herlihy (Riocht) 22.44; 9) J. Doran (Riocht); 10) J. Sexton (Kilmurry).
Almost A Grand Time for Breeda
Breeda Dennehy Willis placed fifth (15.37) in the Carlsbad 5,000m road race held on April 1, 2001 in Carlsbad, California. The 31-year-old from Bandon, County Cork earned US $800 for her efforts. Kenyan Sammy Kipketer, only 19 won the men's race equally his world best of 13.00. Fellow Kenyan Sally Barsosio won the women's race in 15.20.
Duffy In Berlin
Teresa Duffy (Beechmount Harriers A.C.) ran 1:12:56 to place seventh at the Berlin Half Marathon on the 1st of April. Joyce Chepchumba (Kenya) won her third straight women's title with Spain's Fabian Roncero winning the men's race and breaking the mythical hour time barrier with a course record time of 59:52.
Davey 19th in Crescent City
Natalie Davey (Co. Mayo) ran 36.06 to place nineteenth in the Crescent City Classic 10-K road race held in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday, the 14th of April.
