RUN

8-Mile Road and Cross-Country Event
Saturday 10th August 2002

Rathlin Island’s
First Ever Running Event!
Saturday August 10th marks another event in Rathlin Island’s
colourful history. For the first time a
running event will be brought to her shores attracting 150 participants and
their supporters.
This Island lies 6 miles off Ballycastle in Northeast Ireland, so unlike any other event in the UK runners will be travelling to the Island by ferry. Rathlin is eight miles long and less than one mile wide. Before the famine there were 1,200 living on the island, but today the population is less than 75. The community are resilient and proud of their home and are very welcoming to visitors. If after the run competitors were considering exploring more of Rathlin there are a variety of places to stay on the Island.
Rathlin represents a variety of topography and the route of the race will take participants through a series of steep climbing hills, peat boglands and forested areas. The runners will enjoy the sights of Rathlin including the view of Scotland’s Western coastline, a variety of birdlife, 200ft cliff edges, and of course the protected Rathlin Hare which may try and out run you!
On the day there will be live entertainment, refreshments and celebrity guests. All this, and the ferry cost will be included in the entry fee of £16.00.
Young volunteers from the Youth Development Charity, Raleigh International, will be responsible for organising the run, thanks to funding from the Millennium Commission. The young people have recently returned from expedition in Costa Rica & Nicaragua, and Namibia, where they were working on challenging and dynamic projects as part of an 18-month Youth Development Programme.
