Ann Keenan Buckley who turned 40 on 7th January showed she's not quite ready to join the ranks of the Vets. Keenan Buckley (North Laois AC) won convincingly pulling away from Priscilla Hein, the reigning USA Fall Cross Country Champion. Hein, 25 pushed the pace early but couldn't stay with Keenan Buckley who took over at the 2-kilometre mark. Smiling after her victory, Keenan Buckley laughed saying, "Not bad for a runner of my age!" With Ethiopian Dagne Alemu unwilling to lead and Brit Matt O'Dowd unsure of his fitness, Séamus Power found himself in a familiar position - the lead. The Clareman made a valiant effort to defend his title and said of his early pacing the race, ""I just felt nervous with so many bodies around me and with no one else prepared to make a move it was up to me to do something. I came here for a hard race but it was too slow for everyone that mattered in the early stages and yet no one was ready to take a gamble." Matt O'Dowd took the spot of injured Karl Keska and won the race in 21.45, a fast time on a short course. Beating Power in Ireland and Alemu an Olympic 5000 metres was quite a feat for the Swindon star who said of his race. "With just over two to go I thought the pace was going to kill me off, but on the last lap I felt really great. With 300 metres remaining I sensed Séamus, then the Ethiopian, were tiring and I just gave it everything I had." |
