special to Irish Runner.com by Paul Davitt THERE will be four Irish athletes in action tomorrow when the athletics begin in the 21st Universiade here in Beijing. Robert Daly (UCD) and Paul McKee (University Metropolitan Manchester) will both be involved in the 400m. Both are members of the Irish 4 X 400m relay team that did so well in Edmonton, making them one of the highest ranking European teams in the world. |
James Nolan (1500m) will be anxious to finish his season with a medal performance. Nolan is the U23 European Silver medalist, second only to the Olympic champion Schuman. The UCD man came tenth in his heat at Edmonton and will hope to better that result here. Also running tomorrow will be Derval O'Rourke from Cork. She is the national 100m hurdles champion and has recently made the U23 European final. She is currently closing in on her season's best performance and hopefully she'll hit her form at the right time. Coach Patsy McGonagle is satisfied that the Irish athletes have aclimatised to the daily temperatures (25c - 30c). "For the athletes this is an invaluable experience at a multi-sport games, second only to the Olympics. I believe that there are competitors here who will be taking part in Athens in 2004 and some that might even return to Beijing in 2008." Action begins tomorrow at 2am Irish time. |
