Costin Bows Out Of Walk With Injury
at Paris World Championships

Waterford walker Jamie Costin had to bow out of the 50km race this morning on the streets of Paris with a leg injury and dehydration, having made the 30km split on course for a new Irish record.

The top-ranked Irish senior male in the world at 21st, Costin steadily progressed from 31st at 10km (46:51) to 21st by the 20km marker. The halfway point saw the 26-year-old clock 1:56.59 in twentieth, almost seven minutes down on eventual winner Robert Korzeniowski of Poland.

The triple Olympic winning Pole trained with Costin at altitude in Mexico last spring and obviously took most benefit as he grasped a world record time (3:36.03) in taking gold for the second World Championships in a row.

The high temperatures of France's summer took its toll on the 38-man field with fifteen disqualified for lifting and five athletes, Costin included, not finishing the arduous course.
