Cian McLoughlin (Clonliffe Harriers) ran 2:18:51 to place 18th in the Eurocity Marathon held in Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday, 26th October. Sonia O'Sullivan won the BUPA Great South Run 10-miler from Southsea to Portsmouth on 12th October in 53.26. High winds blowing relentlessly off the Solent ruined any hopes Sonia O'Sullivan had of breaking the world 10-mile record again at the BUPA Great South Run. O'Sullivan told the Irish Examiner, "There was no way any records were going to be broken in this weather." John Yuda (Tanzania) won the men's race in 46.36.Taking a brief respite from full-time training, Cathal Lombard (Leevale AC) ran 19.12.7 to place 7th in the Four Miles of Groningen road race in Groningen, Netherlands on 12th October. Marie McMahon Davenport continued her stellar performances with a brilliant win in the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) Half-Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts on October 12th. Davenport covered the tough, hilly 21.1-kilometres in a course record time of 1.10.57. Fittingly, a pair of Providence grads won the 3rd Annual Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial 5k Cross Country Race in Smithfield, Rhode Island on October 5th. Keith Kelly won the men's race in 15.02 and Róisín McGettigan won the women's race in 18.42. The race honours Shawn Nassaney who was killed on September 11th, 2001 aboard the hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 that crashed into the World Trade Center Tower 2. Nassaney ran cross-country at Bryant College and began coursework in the MBA program at Providence College in May 2001.Marie McMahon Davenport dominated the Ro-Jack's Run 5 Miler held on October 5th in Attleboro, Massachusetts winning the event in 25.46, a blistering 5.09/mile pace. | Marie McMahon Davenport ![]() |
Proving you can always come home, Sonia O'Sullivan (Cobh AC) won the BUPA Great Ireland Run 10k in Dublin on October 5th. After almost a month of finishing second to Paula Radcliffe on the roads in England, O'Sullivan shined as she almost always does in Ireland covering the Phoenix Park course 32.24, 40 seconds clear of runner-up Catherina McKiernan (33.04). Australian Craig Mottram won the men's race in 28.36 with Séamus Power the first Irishman home in 29.27 for 3rd place.
