Róisín McGettigan 4th in Mile Final

John McDonnell's Arkansas Razorback squad won their 17th NCAA Indoor T&F Team Championship honours. Alistair Cragg scored 20 points for his Arkansas team winning the 3k and 5k events. In the penultimate event of the meet, Cragg beat defending champion Adrian Blincoe (Villanova) in the 3,000-metre event. Cragg won the race in 7.55.68, a mere .98 ahead of runner-up.

On Friday night, Alistair Cragg defended his 5,000m title at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville on 14th March. Cragg edged Kenyan Boaz Cheboiywo (Eastern Michigan) by .33 improving on his Personal Best (PB) by almost 7 seconds. The Razorback junior ran 13.28.93 more than 20 seconds faster than his 2002 winning time (13.49.80). Cragg's time of 13.28.93 eclipses Mark Carroll's Irish indoor 5k record which was 13.31.93 set in Birmingham 14 February 1999.

Alistair Cragg (#371)

Alistair Cragg was engaged in stirring duel with Kenyan Boaz Cheboiywo of Eastern Michigan. Cheered on by the home crowd at the Randal Tyson Track Center, Cragg took the lead with three laps to go, then held on as the two matched stride for stride the rest of the way. "The race had an unusual end," Cragg said. "The crowd disappeared and I could feel my heart beat. On the last lap, I knew I could do it. I didn't do all of that work for nothing." Cragg's record pace made it difficult for many of the runners that tried to stay with the leaders including his Arkansas teammates in search of valuable team points. Cragg commented on this, "I was disappointed in the run. I feel like I let my team down. I ran too fast and some of those guys aren't in that kind of shape, but it's done now and I won it." Dubliner Wes Alkin placed 16th in 14.50.65.

Clonmel's Thomas Chamney who runs for the University of Notre Dame ran on the Distance Medley Relay that placed 10th in 9.44.05.

Providence College's Mary Cullen from Sligo placed a very impressive 11th in the 3,000-metre event running 9.26.16. Only a sophomore, it is the cross-country All-American's first NCAA Track Championships.

Providence College senior Róisín McGettigan placed 4th in the mile final at the NCAA Championships. McGettigan ran 4.42.06 with Johanna Nilsson (Northern Arizona University) from Kelmar, Sweden winning the event in 4.32.49. McGettigan, who competes for Slí Chúlainn in Ireland, placed 5th in last year's NCAA Indoor Championships. McGettigan, who is coached by Ray Treacy once again, earned All-American status.

McGettigan qualified for Saturday's final in the mile by placing 2nd in the second of two qualifying heats. McGettigan, from Wicklow ran 4.42.49. PC teammate, Deirdre Byrne placed 8th in the first heat of the mile running 4.46.41 and did not advance to the final. Byrne (Avoca, Co. Wicklow) came back later to run on the Providence College Distance Medley Relay, which without McGettigan placed 13th in 11.39.44. The other PC runners were Emer O'Shea from Limerick, Fiona Crombie from New Zealand and American Heather Cappello.
