special to Irish Runner.com by David Mervyn Karen Shinkins' coach Paul Doyle believes she is ready for the step up in class today in Edmonton as she competes in the 400m semi-finals at 2410hrs Irish time. "I was very relieved by Karen's performance yesterday. It is always a bit nerve-racking getting through the first round. But I was confident Karen would perform well." He added, "I know she will perform again today. She has a lot more left in her, she is fitter and faster than she has ever been, and after the first round, she has more confidence in her than I have ever seen before." |
Asked about her draw in the semi-final, Doyle stated, "She has the perfect semifinal heat today which includes heavy race favourite Grit Breuer. It is going to be fast and Karen will be right in the mix. She has the ninth fastest time overall from yesterday's heats." "On what Karen must do to progress," he suggested that, "while I am confident she can be in the final on Tuesday, it will take a new national record to get there. From her training though, Karen's preparation is perfect, and everything indicates that she is ready to run extremely fast." |
