The University of Limerick won both the men and women's team titles at the Irish Universities Athletics Association (IUAA) Indoor Championships held in Nenagh on 6th-7th December. The UL women's team won by the narrowest of margins edging Trinity College Dublin by a mere point scoring 94 points. Orna Donoghue (UL) won the 60-metre hurdles and the pentathlon scoring 28 points herself with Rosemary Daniel, the high jump winner adding an additional 24 points to the University of Limerick total. |
University of Ulster's Anna Boyle won the short sprints capturing the 60m race in 7.86 (7.70 semifinal) and the 200 metres in 25.80. Mary McLoone (TCD) won the horizontal jumps with 5.49m in the long and 11.69m to win the triple jump. Joanne Cuddihy (UCD), a 2002 World Junior Championships 400m finalist won the 400-metre event in 57.32. Kathryn Casserly (NUI Galway) lapped the field to win the 3,000m by almost a minute in 10.06.66. |

The UL Men's squad almost doubled the score of their nearest rival with 99 points to 52 scored by NUI Cork. The highlight of the men's competition was when NUI Cork's Eoin Leen tossed the shot 16.37m, a new Irish Junior, U23 and IUAA Indoor record on his first attempt. During the upcoming outdoor campaign, Leen has an excellent chance of surpassing Victor Costelloe's National Junior Record of 16.59m set in 1988. Costelloe competed in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Leen also won the 16 kg (35 lb) Weight for Distance with a heave of 9.08m. |
David McCarthy (UL) and David Kelly (IT Tallaght) also had impressive double wins. McCarthy won the 200m in 22.30 and set an IUAA Record in the 400m running 48.88. Kelly, who emerged on the national scene last July winning the Senior Men's 800m individual title won the 800m (1.55.40) and 1,500m (4.12.62) events. |
