Thanks to Leevale's Der O'Donovan for this report The Irish Universities track and field championships were held at CIT in Bishopstown on Friday and Saturday. Strong winds and continuous rain over the two days made life difficult for competitors, spectators and officials alike. The Irish Universities organising committee would seriously want to examine the format of the meet in an effort to make the championships more attractive. Major delays between events, especially on Friday, which was the colder day of the two, did nothing for the image of the event. By the end of Friday track events were up to ninety minutes behind schedule. The use of electronic timing was blamed for much of the delays. Electronic timing has been with us for many years now and it's about time its use enhanced the running of meets rather than slow up everything. The use of hand timing in some events should be seriously examined. Cork's Derval O'Rourke of UCD had a superb double, winning the 100m hurdles and 200m in style. |
Brian Murphy of UCC had a tremendous run in the 400m. Running a lot faster in the early stages than he normally does paid rich dividends. From the start he was up with the leaders, and had a slight lead coming into the home stretch. David McCarthy from UL tried hard to overtake him, but there was no catching the Leevale man who won in a personal best time of 48.38, an excellent time considering the atrocious conditions. Paddy O'Gorman of CIT also ran an excellent race to take third. Tony Lilley of CIT took control of the 800m from the start. Settling into the lead he fought off all challenges to win in a time of 1:56.45, with Michael O'Connor of CIT also in the best of form to take third. Lilley was undecided until the last minute on whether he would run or not. He has been suffering from an IT Band injury for the past year or so. |
