Patrick O'Dowd Nicola Coffey (Navan AC), a graduate student competing for St. John's University broke Olivia Kelleher's Irish National Hammer record (57.53m) with a throw of 58.48m winning the Big East Women's Championships. Coffey also placed 15th in the shot putt (12.24m). Roisin McGettigan (Providence College) also set an Irish record of 10.24.35 in the 3,000m steeplechase, a new event for 2001. Both Coffey and McGettigan provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships with one more meeting left to attain the elusive and rigid automatic marks of 61.00m and 10:20.00 in the hammer and steeplechase events respectively. Providence College's Keith Kelly won the 5,000m in 14.19.82 followed by teammate Dermot Galvin (14.19.82). Paul Reilly was fifth in the 10,000m (30.04.79) and Ciaran Lynch grabbed eh seventh spot in 30.20.79. In the women's 1,500m, Geraldine McCarthy (Villanova) ran 4.33.34 and Providence Friar Emer O'Shea ran 4.39.52 but didn't advance to the final. Johanna Doyle (Harvard) was runner-up in the hammer with a throw of 51.84m at the Heptagonal Conference Championships at Princeton on 4-5 May. Enda Johnson (Brown University) captured the 1,500m title in 3:49.98 and ran 3.50.27 in his qualifier. Damien Lowry (Brown University) ran 48.52 in his 400m qualifying heat and 49.01 to place seventh in he final. Lowry also anchored the fourth place (3:18.19) Brown 1,600m relay team. Eoghan O'Dwyer (Yale) placed 10th in the discus with a toss of 41.36m. While on the subject of the hammer, Eileen O'Keefe (Athlone IT) broke Olivia Kelleher's Irish U-23 hammer record (56.22) when she won the Irish Universities Track and Field Championships, 20-21st April 2001 in Santry with a toss of 57.17m. She also won the discus in a championship record of 43.13m. Derval O'Rourke won the 100m (12.49) and the 100m hurdles in 13.96. Jennifer McKenna (DCU) won the 200m (25.76) and the 400m in 55.89. Maria Lynch (Dublin IT) won the 800m (2.15.59) and the 1,500m race in 4.39.47. Brendan Bourke (UL) won the shot putt (11.71) and the discus (37.72). Crusaders Peter Coghlan debuted with a 13.58 (+1.8) in the 110m hurdles at Meeting du Conseil General, Fort de France, Martinique on 28th April. Coghlan won the second section of the hurdle event and his time is better than last season's best of 13.86 run at the Sydney Olympic Games and only .28 off his Irish record. Karen Shinkins (Dublin City Harriers) placed third in the 400m in 52.55. Paul McKee (Beechmount) ran 46.63 in the 400 metres. Rob Daly (Dundrum-South Dublin) placed third in the 400m in 46.87 at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Georgia on 5th May. The St Malachy's lads were in action at the Halifax British Universities Championships held at Scotstoun, Glasgow, from 5-7 May helping Loughborough win the meting with 164 points. Gareth Turnbull won the 1500 metres final in 3.42.18 and 3.52.72 in his qualifying heat. Conor Sweeney place third in the 800m in 1.49.71 and also ran 1.51.3 in his semifinal. Joe McAlister who is focusing on the longer events this season placed third in the 5000m in 14.27.66 after a 15.07 in his qualifying heat. Michelle Carey placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in 60.54 and ran 61.83 the heats. Tom Comyns (Limerick) opened his season at the British League (Division One) in London on 5th May in the 100m (10.67, +1.1) and a 200m (21.08, +2.1) where he beat Dougie Walker. In the field, Sean Lonergan triple jumped 14.64m and Gareth Devlin long jumped 6.88m. Paul Brizzell (Ballymena & Antrim) ran 10.67 to place fifth in second section of the 100-metre event at the Cal State Fullerton meeting held in Fullerton, California. Emily Maher (Kilkenny City Harriers) opened her outdoor campaign with a fourth place finish in the 100m (11.63, +0.4) and an eighth in the 200m (23.73, +2.1) at the Texas Invitational held in Austin, Texas on 4-5 May. Dubliner Aidan Walsh placed second in the 1,500m (3.50.41) and third in the 800m (1.56.27) at the Northeast Conference Championships held in Baltimore, Maryland on 5-6 May. The junior from Fairleigh Dickinson University ran 3:59.8 and 1.56.4 in his qualifying races. Running for Tulsa University, Margaret Danagher (Co. Tipperary) placed 19th in the 1,500m in 4.26.84 at the Cardinal Invitational held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California on 4th May. Clonliffe's Michaela Monahan ran 55.67 to place third in the 400m at the Steve Scott Track & Field Invitational held at UC Irvine in Irvine, California on 6th May. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Valerie Vaughan (Blarney/Inniscara A.C) placed fourth in 58:51 at the Microsoft-USO Defenders 10 Mile Run held in Arlington, Virginia on 6th May. Una English (Dublin City Harriers) placed third in 13:23 at the Luzerner Stadtlauf 4.190 kilometre road race held in Lucerne, Switzerland on 28th April. John Burke (Westmeath) placed 17th in 26:58 in the 8.565 kilometre men's race. Here's a name we haven't seen in a while, Irish Olympian Katy McCandless ran 1:25:38 to place second in the Maratonina dei Due Castelli 21.1 kilometre road race held in Trieste, Italy on 6th May. Roy Fahy of Leevale got back on the winning trail with a clear win (25:23) in the Joe Hourigan Memorial 5 mile road race in Midleton, Co. Cork on 2nd May. Eric Meade of East Cork was second (26:11), followed by three more Leevale runners, Matt Magner (26:24), Billy O'Rourke (26:45), and Paul O'Mahony (27:54) who was ahead of the East Cork pair of Denis McCarthy (28:28) and Frank Cashman (28:34). Daniel Byrne from Mallow was 8th (28:42). International runner Maureen Harrington made the journey from Kerry to win the women's section (28:56), from Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy (29:27), and Carmel Crowley of Bandon (30:09). Noel Berkeley of DSD, who is now resident in east Cork, should be a regular competitor on the Cork circuit from now on. He had almost two minutes to spare (30:55) over Seamus O'Donnell of GCH (32:40) in the SIPTU Mayday 10k organised by Mallow athletic club on Monday. Dermot Callaghan from Donoughmore was third (33:05), ahead of George Murray of North Cork (33:24). Mary Sheehan won the women's race (37:10), from Josephine Killeen of Donore (37:42) and Niamh O'Sullivan of Riocht (39:05). Thanks to Leevale's Der O'Donovan for this report. Catherina McKiernan's luck continues to be allbad as she was involved in a car she was in struck a lorry in an accident in Meath on 4th May. She walked away from the wreck but was in a bit of shock and this could only aggravate her already aching back. |
