2003 Irish Europa Cup Teams

Athletics Ireland announced the Irish teams for the forthcoming Europa Cup competitions taking place in Lappenranta, Finland (Men) and in Aarhus, Denmark (Women) on 21st - 22nd June.

World Indoor bronze medallist Paul McKee was unsurprisingly and deservedly selected in the 400m over Tomas Coman.

The 2000 European Indoor 1500m silver medallist James Nolan was selected in the 800-metre event with the 1500m berth going to 2001 World Student Games bronze medallist Gareth Turnbull, who has made a welcome return from his past chronic injury problems.

The 1994 World Junior High Jump silver medallist Antoine Burke will be making his International debut over 400m hurdles. Veteran Terry McHugh, a fixture on the Irish team since the days of St Patrick himself, will throw the javelin and has also been named as captain.

Last year's European Indoor 400m bronze medallist Karen Shinkins is the marquee name on the Women's team along with Ciara Sheehy, Derval O'Rourke and the in-form Freda Davoren will be expected to gain big points.

A gap has been left in the women's 5,000m while the selectors await progress reports on a number of athletes.
