Carroll Tunes Up for NYC Marathon

Mark Carroll in his first race in about 10 months finished second in the NYC Run to Liberty 10K on Saturday through the streets of Lower Manhattan and afterwards the Irish Olympian proclaimed himself pleased with this effort.

"I was a little rusty and it is a little hard to race when you are putting in so many miles in your legs in getting ready for the marathon," said Carroll, who finished the race in 29:47, three seconds behind winner local runner Joseph Mwai. "It will take just one or two more races to get me going and its all right.

"You got to have your priorities and my priority is November 2nd," Carroll said of his return to New York on that date for this year's ING NYC Marathon. In last year's five-borough race, Carroll finished sixth in his marathon debut. Carroll plans to get back to racing again on the weekend with a 5-miler in his adopted hometown of Providence, Rhode Island.

Ciara Sheehy won the 100 metres in 11.52 (+1.2) and the 200 metres in 23.40 (+1.9) at the Mémorial Eugène Humberset Meeting on 23rd August in Fribourg, Switzerland. Both times are seasonal bests for the Dublin City Harrier sprinter and the fastest times run by an Irish woman during the 2003 outdoor season as well.

Sheehy's 100m performance is a personal best improving on her 11.57 (-0.4) set last year. Sheehy maintains her #3 ranking on the Irish All-Time list behind Michelle Walsh's 11.43 National Record and Sarah Reilly's 11.49. Sheehy's PB in the 200-metre event is 23.21, also from 2002.
