Cronin Runs Provisional Time in 3k Steeple
Western Kentucky University freshman Enda Grandfield (Co. Kerry) used a strong closing kick to win the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15.34.85 at the Cardinal Challenge held at Burford Stadium on the University of Louisville, Kentucky on the 7th Of April. Sophomore Olga Cronin (East Cork) captured the only individual title for the Western women, picking up the gold in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:59.89. Cronin posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time (11.10.00) with the win. The automatic standard is 10.20.00. Junior Terri Hennessy also from East Cork crossed the line in the 5,000m in 19:01.05 for second place.

Cork Trio Grab Top 3 Spots in 3K
Breeda Dennehy Willis led a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000 metre run at a meeting on April 12th at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. The Irish Olympian from Bandon won in 9.23.27 with WKU athletics coach Michelle Scott Murphy from Carraig na bhFear second in 10:08.84, and Terri Hennessy placed third in 10:25.36. Earlier in the meet, Dennehy Willis won the 1,500m in 4:19.29 with Olga Cronin getting second place in 4.33.63. Enda Grandfield won the 3,000m for WKU in 8:41.50, and also finished fourth in the 1,500m in 3:56.61.

Monahan Debuts At 800m
Michaela Monahan experimented with what may ultimately be her best event running her 800m debut in 2.12.80 at the University of California - San Diego Open meet at the Triton Track & Field Stadium, La Jolla, California on the 31st of March. A week earlier, the new Clonliffe Harrier won the 400m (56.54) at a meet at San Diego State University.

Ray Treacy's Providence Friars In Action
The Providence College men's track team competed at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State in Raleigh, North Carolina on March 30-31. The Friars were strong in the 5,000 meters as junior Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Co. Galway) placed second in the 5,000m with a time of 14:07.09 with teammate junior Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Co. Limerick) placing 13th (14:29.64).

The next meeting was held at the University of Connecticut on the 7th of April. Senior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Co. Louth) led the Friars as he finished first in the 1,500 meters (3:47.74). With his time of 3:47.74, Kelly qualified for the IC4A Championship. In addition to Kelly's strong finish, junior Paul Reilly finished second in a time of 3:52.79.

Last weekend (14th April) the Friars competed against six teams at the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island where junior Dermot Galvin was fifth in the 1,500m in 3:49.17 followed by senior Ciaran Lynch of Limerick in sixth in 4:00.66.

The women's team was led by sophomore Roisin McGettigan (Co. Wicklow) who won the 3,000-metre steeplechase ay Raleigh Relays in a time of 10:42.36, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Sophomore Emer O'Shea from Limerick placed 14th (2:15.38) in the 800 meters and junior Kathryn Casserly (Co. Galway, Ireland) was 15th (4:36.91) in the 1,500 meters.

In Connecticut, the Lady Friars were led by The Friars were led by sophomore Emer O'Shea won the 1,500 in a time of 4:34.86 with Stephanie O'Reilly from Wicklow running 5.04.38. Kathryn Casserly placed second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:04.16. At the Brown meet Roisin McGettigan won the 800 metres in a time of 2:11.87 with Emer O'Shea in third in 2.15.56.

Elsewhere On the Track
Barry Egan (Co. Tipperary) who now runs for the University of South Florida ran 3.52.38 (1,500m) at the Florida State relays on March 24th and 14.40.43 (5,000m) at the Raleigh Relays on March 24th.

Iona College's Mark Smyth (Co. Sligo) ran 14.45.95 to place fourth in the 5,000m at Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia on the 7th of April.

Dubliner Alan Dunleavy (University of Arkansas) placed fourth in the 3,000m in 8.32.26 at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on the 14th of April. Also in action was Thomas Quaid, from North Cork who runs for Missouri Southern University placed tenth in the 800m in 1:54.78.

First year Yale University student, Eoghan O'Dwyer from Belvedere College placed ninth in shot putt in 13.55m and sixth in the hammer with a throw of 44.70m at the Long Beach State Invitational on St Patrick's Day.

Brian Murray (Co. Tipperary) ran 3.53.09 to place eleventh in the 1,500m at the Alabama Relays on the 23rd of March.
