Geraldine Hendricken (St Laurence O'Toole) won the Great Women's Run title in Manchester, England on 26th May. Hendricken covered the five-mile course in 26.50 and called the victory the biggest in her life. Hendricken, 30, a biology teacher in Carlow said after the race, "My forms been pretty good just lately and I went straight to the front because I'm a confidence runner. If I'd got caught so what! Now I hope my win here will have impressed the Irish selectors and get me into some races where I can chase the European qualifying standard." Ireland took second in the team race with 32 points behind England with 9 points. Other Irish runners included: Pauline Curley from Tullamore Harriers A.C. (5th, 27.09), Noleen Porter from Finn Valley AC (26th, 29.41) and Teresa Duffy (Beechmount Harriers) running for Northern Ireland finished 11th in 28.05. |

Hendricken took the opportunity to tell reporters what she really felt about the recent release of Roy Keane from the Irish World Cup team saying,"I support Roy Keane absolutely. I think he should have been allowed to stay. Mick McCarthy should not have confronted him in front of all the players. He should have handled it differently. "I support Roy Keane absolutely. There's incompetence everywhere including within the FIA." |
Rosemary Ryan (Bilboa AC) ran 33.56 to place seventh at the Brittanic Asset Management Women's 10-K held in Glasgow, Scotland on 19th May. Lornah Kiplagat (Kenya) won the race in 31.14. Corkman Marcus O'Sullivan, won the Masters (40+) mile in a time of 4.19 at the Ridgewood Memorial Day Run held in Ridgewood, New Jersey on 27th May. The Villanova University coach won US$675 for the win. Conor O'Driscoll was third in 4.33 and earned $75. Valerie (McGovern) Young ran 1:12:06 to place third in the Ogden Newspapers 20-K Classic held in Wheeling, West Virginia on 25th May. She won US$1,500 for effort. |

Richard Mulligan (M 40) ran 30.46 to place second at the European Vets 10k road race championships (M 40-50) held in Riccione, Italy on 24-26 May. Mick O'Doherty (M 40) was 8th in 31.39, Thomas Connor (M 40) placed 11th in 31.52, James Martin Stafford (M40) was 22nd in 32.49, Eugene Coppinger was 82nd in 35.31, Michael Fennel (M 40) finished 134th in 37.11 and Peter Doody ran 37.44 for 146th place. Patrick O'Shea (M 50) was 49th in 34.25, Martin Kelly (M 45) ran 36.33 for 117th place, and Frank Cashman ran 36.37 for 119th place in the race. Frank Reilly (M 55) was fourth (35.30) in the 10 km Men (M 55-80) and Women's race. Richard Connolly (M 55) ran 37.37 for 35th place, Brian Geraghty (M 60) placed 21st in 36.55, Richard Bonass (M 55) ran 39.46 for 84th place, Margaret Greenan (W 40) ran 38.47 for 20th woman and 62nd overall, Orla Gormley ran 39.20 25th/71st place, Elizabeth Hogan (W 45) ran 41.11 for 46th/116th place, Margaret McCreary (W 45) ran 54th/134th, Antoinette Holland (W 45) ran 47.05 for 110th/250th place, Mary Kelly ran 49.07 for 127th/290th, Sandra Coleborn ran 50.47 for 135th/309th place and Anna May Fitzsimmons ran 59.43 173rd/389th place. |
