Gary Ryan (Nenagh Olympic) set an Irish Indoor record in the 200m running 20.99 in Birmingham, England on 23rd February. Ryan wrestled the record away from Paul Brizzel who set the record (21.06) on 1st February also in Birmingham. In fact, Ryan tied that mark winning his semifinal. Tom Comyns (Limerick AC) also ran a respectable 21.77. Juliet Claffey placed 3rd in the pole vault in 3.40m. Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie set the World Record in the 2-mile at the Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham meeting held on 21st February. Gebrselassie ran 8.04.69 going through the mile in 4.03.1 and hitting the 3,000-metre mark in 7.32.81. Paula Radcliffe set a World best in a 10-kilometre road race running 30.21. Her impressive splits were 3K-8.53, 8K-24.05, also a World Best. |
Róisín McGettigan (Co. Wicklow) led the Providence College women's with a victory in the 1,000-metre event in 2.48.28 at the 2003 Big East Conference Indoor Track & Field Champs held on 22-23 February at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Mary Cullen, from Sligo placed 3rd in the 3k in 9.30.64; Sligo, Ireland), who has already qualified for the NCAA's in the 3,000 meters, placed third in a time of 9:30.6. Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Co. Wicklow) finished 5th in the 800m final in a time of 2.13.22 and ran 2.14.28 in her qualifier. McGettigan (2.13.7) senior Emer O'Shea (Co. Limerick) ran 2.12.4, Róisín Quinn (Co. Waterford) ran 2.18.6 and Byrne (2.10.9) placed 3rd in the 4 x 800m relay in 8.55.69. Providence College's Liam Reale (Hospital, Co. Limerick) placed 3rd in the 800m in 1.52.73, Reale won his qualifying heat 1.53.04. Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Co Galway) took 4th in the 5k in 14.39.02 with Mullingar's Martin Fagan (Providence) placing 8th in the 3,000m-event in 8.28.24 with Clonmel's Patrick Guidera placing 15th for PC in 8.43.16. Fagan also anchored the PC DMR that placed 5th in 10.07.22 running 4.13.9 for 1,600 metres. Thomas Chamney, also from Clonmel (University of Notre Dame) ran the 3rd leg helping his team place 3rd in the 4 x 800m relay. Providence placed 5th in 7.42.45 with Reale running second (1.53.7) and Reilly anchoring in 1.55.5. The Notre Dame men and the Miami women won the team titles. |
Zoe Brown, competing for Loughborough won the pole vault in 3.80m (CBP) at the British Universities Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall on 22-23 February. Eva Massey (Ulster) won the Shot Putt in 15.80m (CBP). Anna Boyle (Ulster) placed 2nd in the 60m in 7.55 and third in the 200m (24.96). Joe McAlister placed 3rd in the 3,000m in 8.37.44 and the 5,000m (14.52.58) at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships held on 22 February at Manhattan College, in Riverdale, New York.
