Mark Carroll Leevale's Mark Carroll led a trio of Irishmen winning the 3,000m (7.58.93) in his 2001 outdoor debut at the first meet in the Boston High Performance Series sponsored by New Balance in Waltham, Massachusetts on 19th May. Raheny's Vin Mulvey (Ashbourne, Co. Meath) was second in 8.16.97 followed by Providence grad Larry Morrissey (Co. Waterford) in third in 8.23.14. Sinead Delahunty (KCH) placed second (9.09.44) in the 3,000m with Olympic teammate Marie McMahon Davenport (Co. Clare) getting sixth (9:18.86). Peter Coghlan ran 13.74 (-0.5) to place third in the 110m hurdles at the Qatar Grand Prix I meeting held in Doha on 18th May. The Crusader hurdler is ranked second in the Grand Prix event with 13 points acquired in two meets. Dermot Galvin from Kilrush running for Providence, won the 10,000m in 30.09.96 at the IC4A Conference Championships held at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, USA on 18-20 May.
Dermot Galvin Nicola Coffey from St John's University won the women's hammer in 57.72m at the women's ECAC Conference meet held in conjunction with the IC4A's. The graduate student from Co. Navan will find out later this week whether or not she's qualified for the NCAA Championships. Paul Reilly from Loughrea placed second in the 5,000m race (13.56.19) with teammate Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Co. Louth) getting third in 13.58.87. Iona's Mark Smyth placed 23rd in 14.31.22. Kathryn Casserly, (Co. Galway) also from Providence placed 11th in the 5,000m in 17:01.07. In the 1,500m qualifying heats, Irish 3,000m steeplechase record holder, College's Róisín McGettigan (Co. Wicklow) easily qualified running 4.23.28 - the second fastest time. The NCAA-bound McGettigan could only manage a 4.30.87 for eighth in the final. Teammate Emer O'Shea (Co. Limerick) ran 4.43.45 and did not advance. On the men's side, Dubliner, Aidan Walsh ran 3.50.81 to advance to the final where he ran 3:50.39 for fifth only 1.04 seconds from first place. Western Kentucky University sophomore, Olga Cronin finished second in the 5,000m (17:05.51) and third in the 3,000m (9.53.35) at the Sun Belt Conference Championships held in New Orleans, Louisiana on 11-13 May. She was chased in both races by teammate and Corkwoman Terri Hennessy who placed fourth in the 5,000m (18:02.83) and sixth in the 3,000m (10.22.01). Lisa Cronin placed fifth in the 1,500m (4.43.35) and 13th in the 800m in 2.16.82. In the men's meet, Brian Murray battled Enda Granfield in the 5,000m and 10,000m events. Murray, a senior at the University of South Alabama got the better of Granfield, a freshman at Western Kentucky University in both events. Murray ran 14:51.75 (5th) and 31:21.82 (4th place) compared with Granfield's efforts of 15:04.90 (7th) and 31:41.16 (6th). |
