Alistair Cragg, who recently set the NCAA Indoor 3,000m record won a the 5,000-metre event at the Razorback Tyson Invitational held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Saturday, 15th February. Cragg ran 13.35.93 - 9 seconds clear of runner-up Daniel Lincoln, the reigning 3,000m steeplechase champion. Dubliner Westley Alkin placed 6th in the race (13.55.98) also with an NCAA automatic qualifier (13.58.15). It was a brilliant race and a massive improvement for Alkin who ran 14.24 in last year's race. Karen Shinkins ran 52.81 to placed second in the 400-metre event at the Virginia Tech Invitational held on Saturday, 15th February. It was Shinkin's 2003 debut in the 400m. St Malachy's Joe McAlister (Iona College) ran 8.10.63 to win the University Division 3,000m race at the Armory Invitational held in New York City on Saturday. Providence College's Liam Reale (2nd - 4.04.92), Paul Reilly (5th - 4.08.52) and Patrick Guidera (16th - 4.14.01) competed in the mile at the FasTrack Invitational held at the Boston University Pavilion. Providence graduate Stephanie O'Reilly won the mile in 4.40.92 with PC's Emer O'Shea placing 7th in the 800m in 2.13.19. Olga Cronin (Midleton, Co. Cork) who competes for Western Kentucky University won the 3k in 9.53.02 at the Middle Tennessee Classic held at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on 15th February. James Nolan (UCD) ran 3.41.98 to win the 1,500 metres in driving rain at the ABSA International meeting in Stellenbosch, South Africa on Friday, 14th February. Robert Wade (University of Loyola-Chicago) placed 9th in the 5,000m (14.43.22) at the Canon Invitational held in Indianapolis, Indiana on 15th February. Leevale's James Grufferty (East Tennessee State University) won the 5,000m in 15.05.54 at the Niswonger Foundation Invitational on 1st February in Johnson City, Tennessee. |
