The Providence College women's 4 x 1,500m Relay team placed second in 18.14.33 at the Raleigh Relays held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina on 30th March. The team was comprised of Róisín McGettigan (Co. Wicklow), Emer O'Shea (Co. Limerick), Mary Cullen (Co. Sligo) and Deirdre Byrne (Co. Wicklow). Róisín Quinn (Co. Waterford) ran 60.54 in the 400-metre event.

Mary Cullen ran 16.46.81 to win the 5,000m at the University of Connecticut Invitational held in Storrs, Connecticut on 6th April. Cullen's time meets the provisional qualifying mark (16.48.00) for the NCAA Championships. The automatic qualifying standard is 16.08.00. Other Providence individual champions were Emer O'Shea in the 800m (2.16.93), Róisín McGettigan in the 3,000m steeplechase (10.46.85), Heather Capello (Lockport, New York) in the 1,500m (4.37.94) and Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pennsylvania) in the javelin. Freeburg's throw was also an NCAA provisional qualifier (46.00m) with the automatic standard being 51.50m.

Mary Cullen (North Sligo AC) stepped down to win the 1,500m in 4.32.20 with teammate Kathryn Casserly (Co. Galway) placing second (4.34.45) at the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island on 13th April. Róisín McGettigan won the 800m in 2.10.15 with Emer O'Shea placing 5th in 2.15.70. Róisín Quinn ran 59.67 to place third in the 400 metres.

The Providence College men's team began the outdoor season in North Carolina. Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Co. Clare) ran 14.15.57 to place third in the 5,000m at the Raleigh Relays held in Raleigh, North Carolina on 30th March. Teammate Adam Sutton (Preston, England) won the race in 14.01.26. Providence placed second in the 4 x 1,500m relay in 15.44.05 with a team comprised of Dylan Wykes (Ontario, Canada), Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Co. Galway), Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Co. Tipperary) and Liam Reale (Hospital, Co. Limerick).

Patrick Guidera won the 3,000m steeplechase in 9.25.49 at the University of Connecticut Invitational held in Storrs, Connecticut on 6th April.

Liam Reale ran 1.53.15 to win the 800-metre event at the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island on 13th April. Paul Reilly (3.53.45) and Dermot Galvin (3:53.80) placed 4th and 5th respectively in the 1,500m. Patrick Guidera placed third in the 5,000m running 14:38.57.

Dubliner Westley Alkin (University of Arkansas) won the 1,500m in 3.56.84 at the Southeast Conference Quad Meet held in Starkville, Mississippi on 16 March.

Alkin ran 3.51.66 to place seventh in the 1,500m at the Texas Relays held in Austin, Texas on 5-6 April.

Alkin finished first in the 3,000-metre event in a time of 8.17.19 at the John McDonnell Invitational held in Fayetteville. Arkansas on 13th April.

The Arkansas sophomore's best times in the 2002 indoor campaign were 4.14.86 (mile), 8.11.76 (3,000m) and 14.24.09 (5,000m).

Johanna Doyle (Ballybrack AC) who competes for Harvard won the hammer event with a throw of 55.20m at the Columbia University Invitational held in New York on 13th April.

Doyle placed second in the hammer with a throw of 55.16m at the Harvard -Dartmouth-Brown Triangular Meeting held in Cambridge, Massachusetts on 6th April.

Doyle threw 52.11m to win the hammer throw event at the Rice University Bayou Classic held at Rice University in Houston, Texas on 29-30th March.

Doyle placed 21st in the discus with a toss of 25.59m at the Texas Southern Relays also held at Rice University on 22-23 March.


Aoife Hearne (Co. Waterford) who competes for the University of Tennessee ran the third leg on the 4 x 100m relay, which took third place at the Georgia Relays, held in Athens, Georgia on 16th March with a time of 46.79.

Hearne ran the third leg on the Lady Volunteers 4 x 200m relay (1.38.35), which placed fifth at the Sea Ray Relays held in Knoxville, Tennessee on 13th April.

During the indoor season, the Waterford AC sprinter ran a personal best (PB) in the 200 metres of 25.53. Her seasonal bests included a 7.12 (7.09 PB) in the 55m and 7.69 (7.57 PB) in the 60-metre event.

Western Kentucky University (WKU) coach, Michelle Murphy Scott (Carraig na bhFear) placed second in the 1,500 metres in 4.38.73 with WKU athlete Terri Hennessy (East Cork) placing seventh in 5.02.20 at the Georgia Relays held in Athens, Georgia on 15-16 March. Kerryman Enda Grandfield who competes for Western Kentucky University placed 12th in the 1,500m in 4.07.50.

East Cork's Olga Cronin who runs for WKU ran 9.58.68 to win the 3,000m with teammate Jill Shannon (Lagan Valley) placing 8th in 10.17.83 at the Alabama Relays held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on 21-24 March. Cronin also placed 6th in the 1,500m in 4.39.11 with Enda Grandfield placing 9th in the men's 1,500m in 3:57.44. Terri Hennessy ran 18:32.19 for 9th in 5,000m.

Olga Cronin (Co. Cork) placed 23rd (17.29.00) and Jill Shannon (Jordantown, North Ireland) placed 41st (17.55.30) in the 5,000 metres at the Raleigh Relays held in Raleigh, North Carolina on 30th March. Enda Grandfield sprained his ankle in the men's 5k and was unable to finish.

Terri Hennessy placed 3rd in the 5,000m in 18.39.63 at the Cardinal Challenge held in Louisville, Kentucky on 6th April. Enda Grandfield ran 4.03.91 to place 5th in the 1,500-metre event.

Coach Michelle Scott placed second in the 1,500m (4.40.47) with Jill Shannon getting third in 4.45.93. Shannon also placed 4th in the 3,000m in 10:24.71 with Terri Hennessy getting 8th in 11.42.46.

Olga Cronin won the rarely run 2,000m steeplechase in 7.14.17 at the Florida State University, Florida A & M University and Western Kentucky University Triangular Meet held in Tallahassee, Florida on 13th April. This is the second year that the 3,000m steeplechase is an event for women in the NCAA Track & Field Championships. Olga Cronin also placed 5th in the 800m (2.23.25). Coach Michelle Scott placed second in the 1,500m (4.40.47) with Jill Shannon getting third in 4.45.93. Shannon also placed 4th in the 3,000m in 10:24.71 with Terri Hennessy getting 8th in 11.42.46. On the men's side, Enda Grandfield was 2nd in the 3,000m (8:33.13) and 3rd in the 1,500m (3:57.60).
