Derval O'Rourke (Senior Women's 60m hurdles) and Erin Kinnear (Junior Women's Pole Vault) set Irish National records at Lansing Linde Severnside Trophy Cardiff International held in Cardiff, Wales on Sunday, 9th February. O'Rourke ran 8.18 to win the 60m-hurdle event better her 2002 best of 8.22. Kinnear vaulted 3.60m to win the Junior Women's pole vault. Róisín McGettigan had an impressive day competing against Boston College and Boston University on Friday, 7th February. She broke the Providence College record in the indoor 800-meter run. McGettigan's (Slí Chúlainn AC)first-place time of 2.05.91 in the 800 metres broke the school record, which was held by former Friar Irishwoman Geraldine Nolan, who set the mark (2.07.57) in February 1990 at the New England Championships. In addition, McGettigan's time is the third fastest time by an NCAA athlete this season and she automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track Championship, which will be held on 14th-15th March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Sophomore Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Co. Wicklow) was also brilliant finishing second behind McGettigan in a time of 2.06.00. Her time of 2:06.00 is the second fastest in Providence College history and the fourth fastest time in the country this season. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore All-American Mary Cullen (Co. Sligo) finished second in a time of 9.19.74 and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships as well. Emer O'Shea placed 6th in the mile running 4.56.47. Providence College's Liam Reale won the 800m race in 1.51.88 at the Boston University vs Boston College and Providence held at the Boston University Pavilion on 8th February. Geraldine Hendricken spent most of the race trailing the lead pack in the Fred Lebow Women's Mile at the Millrose Games held in New York City on 7th February. The leaders were paced through 71 seconds for the first 440 yards and 2.22 at the halfway point. Hendricken made a surge at 1000 yard mark moving from near last to on the shoulder of the leader. Her stay at the front was shortlived and the St Laurence O'Toole AC athlete finished fifth in a field of six running 4.44.96 on the slow 11-lap to-the-mile Madison Square Garden track. Elena Iagar from Romania won the event in 4.36.08. Daniel Caulfield (Dublin City Harriers) has placed second in the Millrose 800-metre event twice and his bad luck continued. Caulfield was pushed backwards as the strating pistol was fired and he never seemed to find his rhythm. He stepped off the track after only 50 seconds of running. No worries, he'll be on the track in Boston next weekend seeking a World Championship qualifier which he narrowly missed at the adidas Boston meet on 1st February where he ran 1.48.62. |
Gary Ryan (Nenagh Olympic) won his 200m qualifying heat in 21.90, won his semifinal in 21.57 and won the 200m final in 21.16 - a mere .01 off the World qualifying standard at the Scottish Indoor Championships held in Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland on 8th February. Darren Hough (DCH) placed second in his 200m opening race in 22.33, won his semifinal in 22.10 and placed 3rd in the final in 22.08. Hough also placed 3rd in his heat of the 60m (7.05) and 6th in his semifinal in 7.48. David Gillick (DSD) won his opening round race in the 200m in 22.35 but was disqualified in his semifinal. Crusaders Steven Fleming placed 3rd in the long with a jump of 7.11m. Richard Girvan (Annandale Striders) place d 3rd in the 1,500m in 3.57.82. Ciara Sheehy (Dublin City Harriers) won her qualifying heat in the 200m in 24.22, won her semifinal heat in 24.30 and placed second in the final in 23.79. Avril Dillion (Dundrum South Dublin) ran 9.50 to place 4th in her 60m-hurdle heat and did not advance along with 8.15 in her 60m qualifier. In the 400 metre final, Mary Coghlan (Crusaders AC) placed 4th running 58.36 with McLoone running 60.44 and Alexandria Flamme (DCH) running 60.04 in their heats but not advancing. Sharon Foley Gallen (Lifford AC) placed 3rd in the high jump clearing 1.73m and 5th in long jump (5.52m) with Sinead Swan (Slaney Olympic) jumping 5.30m for 8yh and Mary McLoone (Tir Chonaill) placing 9th in the long jump with a leap of 5.03m. Jennifer McKenna (Metro/St. Bridgid's) placed 2nd in the 800m in 2.14.92, Sinead Peoples (Tir Chonaill) was 3rd in 2.17.58, Lesley O'Connor (DSD) was 6th in 2.29.67 and Mary Coghlan placing 7th in 2.36.67. |
Antoine Burke (Crusaders AC) ran another personal best in a week's time in the 400m hurdles. Burke ran 51.83 at ABSA meeting in Potchefstroom, South Africa on 31st January followed by a 51.45 performance in Bloemfontein on 7th February. He now shares the number five spot on the all-time Irish list with current National Champion Stephen McDonnell. Burke was a member of last summer's Irish 4x400m relay record team and is a relative newcomer to the event. Colin Byrne (St. Abbans) won the 400m-hurdle B-race in Potchefstroom and broke the 52-second barrier for the first time in his career clocking a time of 51.63. Also competing in Bloemfontein was UCD's James Nolan who lost out in the final sprint of a tactical 3000m to finish 4th in a time of 8:16.66. Paul McKee won the 400m in 46.85 at the Chemnitz (Germany) International on 7TH February. Dubliner Westley Alkin who competes for the University of Arkansas placed 3rd in the 3,000m running 8.10.99 at the adidas Classic held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska on 8th February. The time is a personal best for Alkin who ran 8.12.16 on 18th January. Robbie Wade (Portlaw, Co. Waterford) who competes for the University of Loyola-Chicago ran 8.20.46 to place 4th in the 3,000m at the Meyo Invitational on 8th February held on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Clonmel's Thomas Chamney (Notre Dame) ran 1.52.29 to place 3rd in his heat and 9th overall in the 800m. The time is a nice improvement over his indoor debut of 1.54.83. Olga Cronin (Western Kentucky University) won the 3,000m (10.02.55) and placed 7th in the 800m (2.24.27) at the Middle Tennessee State Invitational held on 25th January. WKU teammate Enda Grandfield placed second in the 3,000-metre event in 8.42.48.
