UCC's Orla Drumm captured the bronze medal in the women's 1,500 metres. Drumm, 23, ran a personal best time of 4.21.12 improving on her 4.23.10 set at the same meet in Sheffield a year ago. The biggest story of the meeting from an Irish perspective was the unbelievable transition from the 400m to the 800m by David McCarthy (Le Cheile AC). McCarthy, who placed 5th in the 400m (46.61) at 2003 World Athletics Championships, ran 1.51.05 to place 2nd in his qualifying race on Saturday. On Sunday, McCarthy, still only 23, ran a massive personal best of 1.49.53 to place 4th in the 800m final.
