David Campbell Runs 1.46.99 at Solihull
Qualifies for European Championships

David Campbell ran 1.46.99 to place third in the 800 metres 'A' Race at the British Milers Club Nike Grand Prix meeting held at the Norman Green Athletics Centre in Solihull, England on 24th June. Campbell, 24, met the standard (1.47.20) and qualified for the upcoming European Championships slated for Göteborg, Sweden in August.

Campbell began the 2006 campaign with a 1.49.44 personal best (BMC London, 6 August 2005) and quickly improved with a 1.49.31 at the Papendal Games on 31st May in Arnhem, Nederlands. Next, the St Coca's athlete progressed to 1.48.06 at the Leiden Golden Spike in the Nederlands meeting on 10th June.

His 1.46.99 was still a massive improvement of 1.07 seconds and moved Campbell to #9 on the All-Time Irish Outdoor 800m list ahead of living legend Ronnie Delany's 1.47.2 set in Austin, Texas on 15th June 1957, a year after he won 1,500m Olympic Gold in Melbourne.

Raheny's Vinny Mulvey placed eighth in the 5,000 metres in 13.58.44, a mere .18 off his personal best. Mulvey, Iona College grad, ran 28.58.29 to win the 10,000m at the BMC meeting held a fortnight ago in Watford. Mulvey's performance narrowly missed the European Championships standards which are 5,000m (13.42.00) and 10,000m (28.50.00).

Mark Christie is another athlete on the cusp of qualifying for Göteborg. Christie placed fifth in the 1,500m with a time of 3.42.63, just .72 off his PB set at last year's BMC Solihull meeting. He's chasing the European 1,500m Standard which is 3.41.00.

A trio of Irish women performed well in the 1,500-metre event. Dundrum South Dublin's Linda Byrne placed sixth in women's 'A' race in 4.18.58.

Orla Drumm ran 4.19.76 to place 11th overall. This is Drumm's second consecutive personal best improving on her recent performance of 4.21.74, set at the BMC Watford event.

Ellen Diskin, 18, improved on her Watford PB of 4.30.76 running 4.27.19 to place ninth in the 'B' race.

Rosemary Ryan (Bilboa AC) placed fifth in the women's 5,000m in 16.00.79. Orla O'Mahoney placed eighth in a personal best time 16.20.53 improving on her 16.22.54 set in Waltham, Massachusetts on 26th June 2004.
