Sean Conroy, who competes for Loyola University - Chicago raced in the Horizon League Conference Championships at the Michael Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana on 12th May in what could have been his last collegiate meet. Conroy would have to run 3.47.80 to qualify for the NCAA East Region or gain admittance to the meet as a conference winner. |
After a slow first lap, it was apparent that the only way to qualify for the NCAA Regional was to win the event. Conroy dug deep in the last lap to pull away from Butler University's Scott Overall (London, England) who possesses 3.43.55/13.38.19 track credentials to win the 1,500m title in 3.58.07, just .82 ahead of Overall. Conroy will be toeing the starting line for the 1,500 metres at the Mideast region meet to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee on 26th May. Conroy, who competes for Leevale AC in Ireland, just missed qualifying for the NCAA Region meet at the Billy Hayes Invitational held on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington on 5th May. Conroy ran 3.47.87, just .07 off the qualifying standard. On Friday, 28th April, Conroy, 24, ran the opening leg on Loyola's 4 x 1,600m relay helping the Ramblers place 12th overall with a time of 16.56.37 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. On Saturday, Conroy tied for seventh place in the 1,500 metres with a time of 3.51.46. Conroy, who attended North Monastery under the tutelage of Brother John Dooley, ran 15.47.40 to place third in the 5,000-metre event at the Old Fashion Track & Field Meet held at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on 26th April. Conroy ran 3.58.30 to place tenth at the Long Beach Invitational on 14th April. On 13th April, Conroy, from Cork, placed fourth in his section with a time of 3.49.63 in the 1,500m University Division at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, California. Sean Conroy, 24, opened his 2006 outdoor season running a 3.57.91 1,500m to place third at the Chicagoland Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships held in Naperville, Illinois on 8th April. That was Conroy's first of three 1,500-metre races in a seven-day span. |
