Róisín McGettigan ran a brilliant race to demolish her Irish 3,000m steeplechase record at the 2006 KBC Night of Athletics meeting held in Heusden, Belgium on 22nd July. McGettigan, 25, ran 9.32.04 eclipsing her old mark of 9.45.60 which was also set at the Night of Athletics in Heusden on 31st July 2004. McGettigan (Slí Chúlainn AC) placed third behind winner Cheruto Kiptum (9.26.79) from Kenya and runner-up Victoria Mitchell (9.30.92) from Australia. Eight of the top ten finishers in the race set personal bests including three national records. McGettigan's improvement of over 13 seconds ranks her seventh on the European steeplechase list and puts her in the medal hunt at the upcoming European Championships in Göteborg, Sweden. The next day McGettigan captured the 800-metre Gold Medal at the Woodie's Irish National Championships in Santry where she ran 2.08.10. |
