Thomas Chamney Wins 800m at Mideast Regional
Qualifies for the NCAA Championships

Three Irish athletes competed at the NCAA Mideast Region meet held in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were Thomas Chamney in the 800 metres along with Ava Hutchinson and Sean Conroy, both in the 1,500-metre event.

Thomas Chamney, who competes for the University of Notre Dame, won his 800m qualifying race on Friday, 26th May. Chamney, 22, ran 1.49.60 to advance.

In the final, Chamney ran a brilliant race covering the two laps in 1.48.86 well clear of runner-up Marcus Mayes of Missouri who was clocked in 1.49.02.

Chamney appears poised to make some noise at the upcoming NCAA Championships in Sacramento, California having run a personal best of 1.48.47 a fortnight ago at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.

Chamney, from Clonmel, Co Tipperary, will race on Wednesday, 7th June (First Round), 8th June (Semifinals) and on Saturday, 10th June in the finals which be televised live in America.

Butler University's Ava Hutchinson ran 4.42.47 in her 1,500m qualifier. Hutchinson, who competes for Dundrum South Dublin in Ireland placed eighth in her race and did not advance to the final.

Sean Conroy, who competes for Loyola University - Chicago, ran 3.51.35 to place sixth in his qualifying heat and advanced to the final as a fastest loser. In the final, Conroy, who competes for Leevale, ran an almost identical 3.51.36 to place ninth overall.
