Deirdre Byrne, a grad student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was fortunate enough to not have to run a preliminary round in the 1,500 metres on Friday at the West Region Championships which took place at altitude (4,500 feet) in Provo, Utah.
In Saturday's final, Byrne, from Avoca, Co Wicklow, placed fifth overall with a time of 4.26.09.
By placing fifth, Byrne, a 2005 graduate of Providence College, earned a berth at the NCAA Championships.
The 1,500m semifinal is on Thursday, 8th June with the final on Saturday, 10th June.
Her seasonal best in the 1,500m is 4:17.74, run at Mt. SAC on 15th April and her personal best is 4.16.33 from the 2004 Cork City Sports meeting.
