Fionnuala Britton will join Slí Chúlainn AC club mate Róisín McGettigan on the starting line in the 3,000m steeplechase at the upcoming European Championships. Britton ran 9:53.61 to place fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Euregio meeting in Neerpelt, Belgium on 5th June. Belgian Veerle Dejaeghere won the event in 9:43.14. The time was a massive improvement on her previous best of 10.06.26 set last May in Palafrugell, Spain. Britton also ran 10.08.85 to place second in the 3k steeple in Riga, Latvia on 27th May. McGettigan holds the Irish record in the 3k steeplechase with a time of 9.45.60. Also competing in Belgium were Linda Byrne who placed 8th in 800m in 2.09.78; Azmera Gebrezgi placed 11th in the 800m in 2.12.35 and David Campbell placed fifth in the 800m in 1.49.78. Leevale's Ailis McSweeney finished fourth in a very windy 100m race with a time of 11.86 with +5.1 mps wind at the Meeting Internacional Atletismo in Gavà, Spain on 4th June. McSweeney, 22, also finished fifth (sixth overall) in Race B of the 200 metres in 24.96 (+1.8). |

David Gillick (Dundrum South Dublin) debuted with a 47.03 to place second in the 400 metres at the Reunión Internacional Gobierno de Aragón meeting in Zaragoza, Spain on 3rd June. Piotr Klinczak (Poland) won the event in 46.96. Deirdre Ryan (UCD) placed seventh in the high jump competition with a leap of 1.79m. Ryan holds the Irish Indoor Record of 1.90m and appears poised this outdoor season to break the outdoor record of 1.89m set by Laura Sharpe in 1994. David Campbell (St Coca's) ran 1.48.88, to win the 800 metres in a personal best at the Keien Meeting held in Uden, Netherlands on 3rd June. Linda Byrne (DSD) also set a PB placing second in the 1,500m in 4.24.18 with Azmera Gebrezgi getting fourth in 4.30.89. Michelle Carey (Dublin Striders) ran both 400-metre races winning the hurdles in 57.49 and placing fifth in the flat race in 54.11. |
Rosemary Ryan (Bilboa AC) won the 3,000 metres in a personal best 9.27.56 at the Manchester meeting held on 3rd June. Crusaders Antoine Burke ran a pair of 400-metre races. He placed fourth in the flat 400m in 48.02 and fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.66. Ciara Sheehy (Dublin City Harriers) had impressive opening to her 2006 outdoor campaign winning the 200 metres in 24.29 (-0.6) ) and placing second in the 100-metre event in 12.02 (-1.1) at the Papendal Games in Arnhem, the Netherlands on 31st May 2006. Alexis Joyce (USA) won the 100m in 11.98. Darragh Graham (Slí Chúlainn AC) tied for third in Race 1 of the 100-metre event with a time of 11.17 (-2.2) and won Race 1 of the 200 metres with a time of 22.01 (-1.0). American John Woods was the overall winner of both events in 10.46 (-2.1) and 21.05 (-0.9). St. Coca's David Campbell placed second in Race 2 of the 800 metres with a time of 1.49.31 with Moroccan Abdelaati Iguider the overall winner in 1.48.00. |

James Nolan, 29, recovered after a shaky start at Hengelo (28th May) where he ran 3.43.01, to run 3.38.51 in the 1,500m at the Bislettt Games in Oslo, Norway on 2nd June. Kenyan Brimin Kiproto won the race in 3.36.53. With the Dream Mile the premier event at Oslo, the 1,500 metres was essentially a 'B' race but Nolan's time in early June shows he may be ready to improve on his personal best of 3.35.69 set in 2003 at Heusden. Karen Shinkins was also in action in Oslo placing eighth in Race A of the 400-metre event in 52.86. |
