Alistair Cragg sets Irish 5,000m Record was the headline on both the IAAF and the Gaz de France websites shortly after the Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis meeting ended on Saturday evening. A computer timing and subsequent results snafu had Cragg credited with breaking Mark Carroll's record of 13.03.93 set in Berlin on 1st September in Berlin. Cragg who was ill before last weekend's Cork City Sports 1,500m race had obviously not fully recovered and was forced to drop out of the 5,000 in Paris. No one doubts that Cragg is capable of breaking Carroll's 8-year-old mark but it will have to wait another day. Cragg ran 13.08.97 in New York on 3rd June.
