Liam Reale Wins Big East 1,000m Gold

Providence College senior Liam Reale won the 1,000m gold medal at the 2005 Big East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York on 19th-20th February. Reale (Hospital, Co Limerick), who narrowly missed dipping under four minutes for the mile last weekend (4.01.53) won his heat on Saturday in 2.26.63 and captured the final on Sunday in 2.24.58. Reale's time is just off his personal best of 2.24.41 (#6 All Time Irish Indoor) set in last year's event where he placed second. Reale also anchored the PC 4 x 800m relay to 6th place with a time of 7.42.90. Providence senior Róisín Quinn from Waterford placed 8th in the 1,000m final (2.56.10) after running 2.55.08 in her qualifying race. Another Providence senior, Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Co Tipperary) placed 12th in the 5,000-metre event in 15.10.37. Villanova freshman Richard Corcoran from Dublin ran 4.15.93 in his mile qualifying heat but only managed a 4.23.18 in the final for 12th place.

Iona College sophomore Michelle Gallagher (Dundrum South Dublin) won the mile in 4.55.18 at the 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the historic 168th street Armory in New York City on 18th February.

Iona College senior Sean Connolly (Tallaght, Co Dublin) placed 2nd in the mile (4.03.49) behind teammate Richard Kiplagat (4.02.58). Rob Connolly was 10th in 4.41.95. Iona senior Mark Smyth (Sligo AC) placed 4th in the 3,000m (8.31.25) behind a trio of Iona teammates.

Wicklow's Brian Farrell, from Stony Brook University finished 8th in his mile race with a time of 4.16.48 at the America East Conference Indoor Championships on 18th-19th February at Boston University.

Leevale's Alan Foolkes who competes for McNeese State placed 8th in 15:27.43 at the Southland Conference Indoor Track Championships held in Houston, Texas on 19th-20th February.

Dubliner Wes Alkin (Eastern Michigan University) ran 8.36.61 to place 4th in the 3,000m at the Harold Silverston Invitational on 19th February in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

High Point University freshman Cheryl Guiney ran 10.48.60 to place 23rd at the 3000m Virginia Tech Challenge held in Blacksburg, Virginia on 12th February. Guiney placed 15th in the mile with a time of 5.21.71 at the UNC Invitational on 29th January in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Guiney, a freshman placed 10th in the 3,000m with a time of 10.59.98 at the Niswonger Foundation Invitational held on 22nd January at the David E. Walker Track on the campus of East Tennessee State, Johnson City, Tennessee. The North Belfast Harrier anchored her team's winning Distance Medley Relay (12.25.41) at the Carolina Challenge meet held on 15th January at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
