Providence junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar AC) won the 3,000m in 8.04.62 (23rd All-Time) with Iona graduate Joe McAlister (St Malachy's) placing 3rd (8.10.86) at the St Valentines Invitational held at Boston University on 11th - 12th February in Boston, Massachusetts. Iona College senior Sean Connolly (Tallaght, Co Dublin) showed some impressive range placing 2nd in 1,000m in 2.22.47. Iona's Rob Connolly (DSD) placed 8th in the mile with a time of 4.08.42. Vinny Mulvey (Raheny Shamrock) fresh off his half-marathon ran a tempo run in the 5,000-metre event clocking 14.28.71. With work and education obligations, Mulvey can't get back for the Inter Clubs but hopefully will earn selection as there are very few more committed to Ireland than himself.

In the women's competition, Providence grad, Róisín McGettigan (Slí Chúlainn AC) placed 2nd in the women's mile with a time of 4.32.35 with fellow Friar graduate Amy Rudolph winning the event in a US leading time of 4.31.92. McGettigan's mile time (1,500m conversion = 4.12.35) is superior to the European Indoor Championships of 4.16.00 in the 1,500 metres. Iona sophomore Michelle Gallagher (Dundrum South Dublin) just missed breaking the 5.00 barrier in the mile placing 7th in her section in 5.00.45.

Providence alum Emer O'Shea, from Limerick placed 5th in 800m in 2.11.39 with Providence senior Róisín Quinn from Waterford in 6th spot in 2.12.28.

Kim Smith, who will graduate in May from Providence won the 5,000m in 14.50.46 which the second fastest time in the World this season and sixth fastest all-time indoors. Smith, who is coached by Ray Treacy (Villierstown, Co Waterford), will be warming up for World Cross Country Championships at the Rás na hÉireann Cross Country International to be held on 27th February.

University of South Alabama sophomore Erin Kinnear won the pole vault with a jump of 3.65m at the Middle Tennessee Valentines Day Invitational held in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on 12th February.

Butler senior Thomas Frazer placed third in the 3,000 meter run in 8.07.80 at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa on 12th February. Waterford's Gavin Kennedy (Depaul University) ran 4.09.57 to place 14th in the mile.

Alistair Cragg (Clonliffe Harriers) won the 3,000m event in 7.40.53 with Leevale's Mark Carroll placing 3rd in 7.46.78 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on 11th February. Butler Senior John Frazer (St Malachy's) ran a personal best time of 14.21.34 in the 5,000m to place 11th. Peter Coghlan, (Crusaders AC) ran 7.89 to place 7th in the 60-metre hurdles with American Allen Johnson winning the race in 7.51. Coghlan also ran 7.89 to place 3rd at the Niswonger Foundation Invitational held on 22nd January at the David E. Walker Track on the campus of East Tennessee State, Johnson City, Tennessee.

Dubliner Wes Alkin (Eastern Michigan University) ran 8.55.17 to place 10th in the 3k at the Eastern Michigan University Classic on 12th January in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Ray Treacy's Providence College Friars were in action at the Boston 7-Way meet on 7th February versus Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, Rutgers, MIT and Northeastern. Providence College senior Liam Reale had a dual with Providence alum Mark Carroll in the mile. The savvy Corkman Carroll (4.01.46) edged Reale (Hospital, Co Limerick) whose second place time of 4.01.53 ranks him 17th on one of the most prestigious list in Irish athletics, the indoor mile. Reale is one spot (.13) behind living legend Ron Delany.

In front of crowd of 13,519, Kenyan Bernard Lagat followed pacemaker and fellow Kenyan Elkanah Angwenyi through the first quarter in 55.8 seconds, immediately separating himself from a field in which young American Alan Webb was running in third. Unfortunately, UCD's James Nolan was last. Lagat came through the halfway point in under 1.55 and crossed the 1320-yard mark in 2.52.8. With a lap to go (160 yards), the New York City Madison Square Garden crowd was deafening as they sensed a record. Lagat, the Athens silver medallist in Athens at 1,500m finished in 3.52.87 to break the Millrose Games record of 3.53.00, set in 1981 by "Chairman of the Boards" Eamonn Coughlan.

Thomas Chamney, from Clonmel, Co Tipperary ran 2.24.86 to the 1,000m event at the Meyo Invitational on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on 4th February.

Joe Byrne (University of Southern Illinois) won the mile run in 4.12.57 at the McDonalds Invitational in in Carbondale, Illinois on 5th February.

Tadhg O'Callaghan (Yale) ran 2.31.13 to place 3rd in the 1,000m at the Yale versus Cornell meet held in Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on 5th February.

Iona's Michelle Gallagher (DSD) placed 10th in her section of the women's mile with a time of 4.57.12 while Wicklow's Brian Farrell, from Stony Brook University finished 14th in his mile race with a time of 4.16.32 at the New Balance Collegiate Games at the New York City 168th Street Armory track on 4th February. Rob Connolly (Iona) placed 29th in the 3k in 8.33.90.

Vinny Mulvey (Raheny Shamrock) placed fourth in the Las Vegas International Half-Marathon in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, 30th January. Mulvey covered the 21.1 kilometres (13.1 miles) in 1:07:24.

Mulvey, 25 is the reigning Inter County Cross Country Champion winning the title in Dungarvan, Co Waterford in November. He was also the first Irishman home (27th place) at the 2004 European Championships in Heringsdorf, Germany in December.

Christian Hesch (Morro Bay, California) captured the men's race in 1:06:35 with Nili Avramski (Israel) placed first in the women's event in 1:16:10. Gilbert Koech (Kenya) won the men's marathon in 2:13:45 with Olga Kovpotina (Ukraine) taking the women's title in 2:31:54.

Lagan Valley's Erin Kinnear (University of South Alabama) placed 2nd in the ploe vault with a jump of 3.65m at the Hoosier Relays held in Bloomington, Indiana on 29th January. Southern Illinois University's Joe Byrne (Down Patrick, North Ireland) placed 5th in the 3,000m in 8.34.39.

A pair Irish runners won the 3,000-metre event at the Boston University Invitational held on the campus of Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts on 28th - 29th January. Leevale's Mark Carroll, competing for adidas won the men's event in 7.46.60 beating American mile-phenom Alan Webb who was second in 7.47.19. Iona College's Sean Connolly was 10th in 8.08.11 (27th All-Time) with Connolly's teammate Rob Connolly in 26th (8.22.74) and Providence senior Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Co Tipperary) placing 39th in 8.37.16.

In the women's 3k, Róisín McGettigan (Slí Chúlainn AC) competing for New Balance ran 9.16.48 to win with Iona College sophomore Michelle Gallagher placing 23rd in 10.00.20. Emer O'Shea (Limerick), competing for the Boston Athletics Association won the 1,000 metres in 2.51.10.

Providence junior Martin Fagan placed second in the 5,000m in 13.58.05 with Iona grad Joe McAlister placing 8th 14.22.67 Fagan's time rank 14th on the All-Time Irish indoor list. Liam Reale placed 4th in the mile with a time of 4.04.75 with Yale's Tadhg O'Callaghan from Cork placed 28th in the mile 4.19.96.
