Iona College senior Sean Connolly ran the second-fastest mile in Iona history at the New Balance Games, held at the 168th Street Armory in New York City on 22nd January. Connolly, from Tallaght, Co Dublin blazed a 4.02.98 mile to place sixth in the elite men's mile event. Kenya's Elakanah Angwenyi won the race in 3:59.38. He was just half-a-second shy of breaking the 14 year-old mark of 4:02.48, set by Packie Mulvaney in 1991 at Boston University. Connolly holds Iona's freshman mile record - 4.08.04. Recent Providence grad, Róisín McGettigan (Slí Chúlainn AC) placed sixth in the women's mile with a time of 4.37.53. Villanova grad and World Indoor 1500m silver medallist Carmen Douma-Hussar won the event in 4.28.43. On 11th December, McGettigan, won the 3,000m in 9.27.71 at the Harvard Invitational. |

The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams opened the 2004-05 season on 4th December 2004. The men competed at Alden Invitational at Brown University, while the women participated in the Five Way Meet at Boston University. PC senior, Liam Reale (Hospital, Co. Limerick) won the 800m in 1.53.22. The Providence women were led by senior Róisín Quinn from Waterford who won the 1,000 meters in a time of 2.53.27. On 11th December, Reale won the invitational mile at the Harvard Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts in 4.06.44 with Quinn taking the women's 800m in 2.13.77. |
The Providence College women's indoor track team competed at the New England Challenge Cup at Brown University on Sunday, 16th January. The Friars were paced by two first-place finishes, including Deirdre Byrne (Co Wicklow), who finished first in the mile in a time of 4.51.27. Providence's other first-place came in the distance medley relay as Róisín Quinn (Co Waterford), Katie Boyle (Providence, Rhode Island), Megan Fanning (South Windsor, Connecticut) and Byrne combined to run a time of 12.22.17. Quinn also placed second in the 800 metres where she ran a time of 2:16.76. Reale won the 800 meters in a time of 1.52.56 at the Terrier Cup held at Boston University on 22nd January. Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Co. Tipperary) placed 5th in 3,000m in 8.32.99. Andy Ronan's Stony Brook indoor track and field teams opened their 2004 season at the Fordham Quad Meet 3rd December. Brian Farrell, from Wicklow finished fourth in the 5000 in 15.05.6. Farrell finished fourth in the 3000-metres at the New York University held on 14th January in IC4A qualifying time of 8.27.48. |

Waterford's Gavin Kennedy (Depaul University) ran 4.23.87 to win the mile run at the University of Chicago Track Opener on 8th January. Southern Illinois University junior Joe Byrne (Co Down) won the mile in 4.20.69 at the Saluki Booster meeting held in Carbondale, Illinois on 22nd January. Leevale's Alan Foolkes who competes for McNeese State placed 17th in the mile with a time of 4.30.16 at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Meet held at the University of Houston on 21st January. Dubliner Richard Corcoran, who competes for Villanova placed 3rd in the mile (4.12.32) at the New York City Collegiate Invitational at the Armory on 14th January. Corcoran ran 4.23.45 to place 2nd at the Jack Pyrah meet on 4th December. Dubliner Peter Dalton who competes for East Tennessee State University ran 8.54.86 to place 14th in the 3,000m at the Niswonger Foundation Invitational held on 22nd January at the David E. Walker Track on the campus of East Tennessee State, Johnson City, Tennessee. A week earlier Dalton ran 8.36.80 to place 10th in the 3k at the Virginia Tech Invitational. |
Butler University senior Thomas Frazer picked up where he left off in the cross country season and earned a victory in the mile run at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana University on Saturday, 15th January. Frazer (St Malachy's), who helped Butler to a fourth-place national finish at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championship, picked up a victory in his first 2005 race. He paced a 17-runner field in the mile run with a winning time of 4.18.76. Yale University first year runner Tadhg O'Callaghan from Cork placed 5th in the mile (4.16.64) at the Dartmouth vs. Columbia vs. Yale Tri-Meet held in Hanover, New Hampshire on 22nd January. Dubliner Wes Alkin (Eastern Michigan University) ran 4.27.43 to place 8th in the mile at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational on 15th January in Ypsilanti, Michigan. |
